FLC Sunset

I was walking home through the Fort Lewis College campus yesterday evening and caught this view of the sunset near the new athletic fields recently built there. The prominent cuesta on the horizon is one of my favorite landforms in the area. It is Carbon Mountain, part of the infamous Moving Mountain ridgeline  near to Lake Nighthorse

Nature trail

This trail connects the Fort Lewis campus to the neighborhood around 8th St. and 8th Ave. It is really muddy in spots on account of all the snow melt.

Fort Lewis Clocktower

One of the routes I choose to get home from town takes me through part of the Fort Lewis College campus. The weather and lighting were so nice the other day, I decided to take the scenic way through the center of the campus. This is the view of the Clocktower and the La Platas lurking in the back.

Cresent Moon at sunset

Things on blogger seem to be working again so here is my post for the day. I was walking across the Fort Lewis campus when I captured this photo. It was about a week ago, so the phase of the moon is not current.

Red Rainbow

After the intense fire of the sunrise I showed you yesterday died down, I rounded the corner and was awe struck by this sight to the west. Red rainbows are a rare treat, as they can only happen when the sunlight travels long paths through our lower atmosphere, where they are scattered by air and dust molecules. The shorter wavelengths of blue and green are scattered the most,  leaving the remaining light richer in reds and yellows. Due to the special circumstances needed for the production of a red rainbow, they  remain an illusive treat.

Pothole Point

Here in Durango, there are numerous trails that begin in town and wind all over the countryside around it. I found this pothole and this rock while checking out the Horse Gulch and Telegraph trail system directly east of town. In this picture, the Fort Lewis College spreads upon it's little Island in the Sky and town lies below. The mountains in the distance are receiving their daily allotment of rain and the rest of the area remains dry.

Fort Lewis College recently installed this table on the rim of the mesa. One of the best spots in town to take lunch
