Down at the Depot
It's quiet here this time of the year. The train is only running to Cascade Canyon, which is around halfway to Silverton. Nonetheless, passengers are still being drawn to take the scenic ride through time.

Ski Day
I went snowboarding yesterday up at Durango Mountain Resort. It was my first time this season and needless to say I am a bit sore!

Red-Tailed Hawk
Yesterday, while doing dishes, my Significant Other looked out the window and spied something flying by. It didn't look like a typical Magpie or a Gilded Flicker, both common birds in our area this time of year. I got out my camera and trained my lens on this beautiful raptor, a Buteo jamaicensis, also known as a Red-Tailed Hawk or Chickenhawk. These birds are common to our area, but I rarely get a chance to see one, and this is the first time ever that I have been able to get a picture of one. Even though he was at least 140 meters away, I was able to snap these pictures with my new camera.

Flowing
In this tight area just south of historic downtown, the flow of traffic on Hwy 550/160 and the flow of the Animas River is compressed against the train yard to the north and Smelter mountain on the south.

Sun rise with the Strater
I was walking to work the other morning and captured this view of the historic Strater Hotel as the sun was coming over Raiders Ridge behind me. I love how Perins Peak on the horizon is one of the first landforms to capture light from the sun as it rises in the mornings.

A look at the Needles
A long view to the north, where the Needle Mountain Ranges rise to 13,000' above sea level. I took this picture from The Lion's Den structure near the Hillcrest Golf Club in Durango. The mountains are about 30 miles north of Durango

FLC Sunset
I was walking home through the Fort Lewis College campus yesterday evening and caught this view of the sunset near the new athletic fields recently built there. The prominent cuesta on the horizon is one of my favorite landforms in the area. It is Carbon Mountain, part of the infamous Moving Mountain ridgeline near to Lake Nighthorse

Silver Mountain
Silver Mountain is one of the more prominent peaks of the La Plata Mountains seen from Durango. As its name suggests, it was found to host veins of the precious metal. While mining of the mountain is now a thing of the past, one may still find traces of galena, lead, pyrite and traces of gold and silver in the mountain.
