Waking up Wet

A steady rain fell most of the night last night, leaving everything nice and wet. Oh, how I love the monsoon season!

Bad Weather

Weather outside is really crummy right now. It's cold and raining, not my favorite combination

Swinging Bridge

The gilded look of fall on the Animas makes this bridge appear to be going to another world. Narnia, perhaps?

Cloud to Mountain

Clouds from a passing storm get hung up on the La Platas. After this storm passed , the mountains proudly displayed their new coat of snow. Unfortunately, I was unable to get a pic after the storm. I took this picture from Trappers Crossing, a subdivision southwest of town. As always, click the picture for a closer look.

A storm conceals the La Platas behind a sheet of rain and scatters the light.

Red Rainbow

After the intense fire of the sunrise I showed you yesterday died down, I rounded the corner and was awe struck by this sight to the west. Red rainbows are a rare treat, as they can only happen when the sunlight travels long paths through our lower atmosphere, where they are scattered by air and dust molecules. The shorter wavelengths of blue and green are scattered the most,  leaving the remaining light richer in reds and yellows. Due to the special circumstances needed for the production of a red rainbow, they  remain an illusive treat.

Pothole Point

Here in Durango, there are numerous trails that begin in town and wind all over the countryside around it. I found this pothole and this rock while checking out the Horse Gulch and Telegraph trail system directly east of town. In this picture, the Fort Lewis College spreads upon it's little Island in the Sky and town lies below. The mountains in the distance are receiving their daily allotment of rain and the rest of the area remains dry.

Left Behind

A thunderstorm has come and gone.Wet roads and small puddles are left behind

Thunderstorm on the prowl

An afternoon thunderstorm rolled loudly through town, flickering it's forked lightning tongue and growling thunder

Flash Flood

A brief thunderstorm brought enough rain to overwhelm many of the storm drains around town. This one here is loaded with silt and debris, affecting the color of the river.

Monsoon Season is Finally Here

And just in the nick of time. If there was no monsoon, I don't think this area of the country would be as comfortable as it is
