Red Rainbow
After the intense fire of the sunrise I showed you yesterday died down, I rounded the corner and was awe struck by this sight to the west. Red rainbows are a rare treat, as they can only happen when the sunlight travels long paths through our lower atmosphere, where they are scattered by air and dust molecules. The shorter wavelengths of blue and green are scattered the most, leaving the remaining light richer in reds and yellows. Due to the special circumstances needed for the production of a red rainbow, they remain an illusive treat.

Daybreak and Valley Fog
A couple of days ago. Silver Peak is poking out of the fog on the left, Lewis Mountain is just barely catching some rays on the right.

San Juan Brewfest
Sorry for the late post today. Yesterday was the 14th Annual San Juan Brewfest. It was held in Downtown Durango at Buckley park and took place in the street, as you can see from my photo. There were almost 30 different brewers in attendance and it was a great, friendly party. I would recommend this event to all who carry an appreciation for beer.

Durango from the West
Here we look towards Durango from a niehborhood in the west.. The morning was very beautiful, with many low clouds floating through the valley and shafts of sunlight peeping through here and there.
This truly is on of my favorite local views. I just love the look of the ridges as they dip off out of view. The clouds really help to bring out the drama of the landscape also.

Watching the Race VIA Jumbotron
After the race departed town, everybody migrated to Buckley Park to party down and to catch some of the action on the big Jumbotron screen they set up. It was a mad house there. There were a lot of people, and it seemed as though everyone had their bike, too. Bikes were chained and locked to just about everything permanent around the whole block. It was a really great time, and I hope the race comes through here again!

Race Day
The USA PRO CHALLENGE happened yesterday, and it was really awesome to participate in. I found a really great spot to watch the race and I got a few good pictures of the peloton as it went by. The race continues today. It begins in Montrose, Colorado and ends in Crested Butte. Check out the official USA PRO CHALLENGE website to learn more and to watch live coverage

The View from Molas Pass
Molas Pass is on Highway 550 between Durango and Silverton. It is actually the second pass one must cross over to get to Silverton from the South. The Elevation here is 10,910 ft./3325 m. This area is actually a city park, owned and maintained by the City of Silverton. It is breathtakingly beautiful up here and serves as one of the best playgrounds you could ever find.
Molas Lake is sittin' pretty in the middle right and the town of Silverton is out of view in the very large, sun-drenched valley in the upper left

The Guardian
The great, old Piñon pine has kept guard for well over 100 years, judging from it's size. It has it's self a pretty sweet spot too. Right on the edge of a large hogback ridge.

Pothole Point
Here in Durango, there are numerous trails that begin in town and wind all over the countryside around it. I found this pothole and this rock while checking out the Horse Gulch and Telegraph trail system directly east of town. In this picture, the Fort Lewis College spreads upon it's little Island in the Sky and town lies below. The mountains in the distance are receiving their daily allotment of rain and the rest of the area remains dry.

Old main Post Office
This structure was built in 1929 and underwent restoration 1985. These days, this building houses professional offices for private firms.
As a professional window cleaner, I really don't like the small, french paned windows, but I do think they look very nice on this old building.

Downtown in the morning
The scene around 9th Street and Main Ave. around 7:00 am.
I really like how the corrugations of Hogback are highlighted in the early morning hours. Perins Peak plows the horizon

All drains flow to river
All storm drains in Durango eventually flow into the Animas. In order to inform the public, each and every street drain has a small label attached with a fishy silhouette and the words " No Dumping, Drains to River."

Another Gnome Home
This is the third or fourth such residence I have seen around Durango. I guess this town is a great place to live for small imaginary folk as well

Silverton Main Drag
This is the Main drag through Silverton, Colorado. We came up for the day to check things out and had a send-off party for one of our employees who is moving away. It's such a beautiful town, I wish I could live here

Gimme, Gimme
People feed the chipmunks too much at Treasure Falls, East of Pagosa Springs. This tame fella came right up to me looking for something to eat. All he got was his picture taken
