On the flanks of the Hogsback

The Hogsback is a landform just west of downtown Durango. I enjoy coming up here to look for fossils in the shale and admire the beauty of the weathering of the hills. This day I had brought my bike and was on my way up to the top. The view from there will come tomorrow.

Bench on the edge

This bench overlooks Durango from the rim of Fort Lewis College. The trail you see in the foreground actually goes all around the high terrace the college and the local golf club sit atop of. I really like to ride my bike around it and this bench and others like it around the way are great places to stop and soak in the view

Celadon

The rough landscape of the Celadon area begs to be explored. Unfortunately this area is all private land.

Threads of life

Durango is situated on the edge of the high desert and the mountains. In fact the root word for Durango is the Basque word "Urango" which could be translated as "Water Place". It certainly fits Durango well as it is one of the better watered places in the Four Corners. If it wasn't for these threads of life giving waters flowing through this place, it would be an extremely hard place to live as it receives less than 20" of rain a year.

Dusty Days

Spring is upon us, and in the Four Corners that mean wind. Lots of wind. I have started to notice our skies becoming a little bit more hazy day by day. In this picture, this dust is being stirred up off of the bare shale slopes of Perins Peak, but as spring progresses we will experience dust brought in from Utah and Arizona, which are to the West and Southwest.

Yesterday I was riding my bike along and I noticed this cool car sitting outside the Durango Discovery Museum. I love old cars like this one.

At the water's edge

North of the 32nd St. bridge the waters of the Animas flow slow and deep. South of here the river runs on hard rock and the depth is decreased and the current increases. There also are very little to no boulders found in the river from at this point.

Eyes of Wisdom

Buddha's Eyes lookout onto Main Ave. from the awning of Himalayan Kitchen. The eyes symbolize the omniscience of the Buddha. This symbol is found on many Buddhist temples in the land of Nepal. I like to think these eyes are watching over the rowdy bar patrons through the nights.

I took this photo outside my door a couple of days ago and forgot about it. I wanted to share.

Deer in the yard

It is a common occurrence to see deer in the yard. On this day, our door was open and our cat, Molly, was very interested in them. I wonder what she thinks of them. Does she see them as rodents of unusual size?

Winter's Return

With a remarkably dry January, and a February that felt mostly like spring, it's nice to see winter conditions once again. Today we woke to a couple inches of new snow and a heavy blanket of fog.

Raiders Ridge

This is my view from my front door. Raiders Ridge is catching the last rays of the day.

This is the same view as of this morning. As you can see, we got a little bit of snow! It isn't much, but it is greatly needed.
