What did I find?

on my way home, I picked up this large rock and on the underside i found this strange thing. I have no idea what it could be, but it looks to me like a fossilized bone. I included the lighter in the shot for scale. Anyone out there know what this could be?

3rd Avenue

This is one of the nicest street in all of Durango. The houses are mostly older Victorian style homes and as you can see the street is lined with lots of large trees. It's hard to capture how cool this street really is from just one single spot. You really must drive or walk the length of it to see everything that makes this street special

Bear Creek Falls

This panorama shows the Bear Creek and the new bridge which was completed this summer. This spot is on the Million Dollar Highway, only a few miles south of Ouray. Driving on this road is quite an experience. The scenery is outstanding, but it is hard to concentrate on that if you happen to be the driver. It's white-knuckle for most, as there are large drops right off the road and there are no guard rails.

Morning stroll by the river

I feel lucky that the route I must take to get to work takes me right by and over the Animas. I really enjoy being able to check out the changes that occur daily and not so daily. The river level has stayed about the same (155 cfs) for a month or two, but I have seen birds migrating through, a couple of fish and most obvious of all, I have watched all the tree leaves turn gold.

The gilded look of fall on the Animas makes this bridge appear to be going to another world. Narnia, perhaps?

Fort Lewis Clocktower

One of the routes I choose to get home from town takes me through part of the Fort Lewis College campus. The weather and lighting were so nice the other day, I decided to take the scenic way through the center of the campus. This is the view of the Clocktower and the La Platas lurking in the back.

Then and Now

While you are walking down Main Ave., you may notice small placards showing a photograph of that place with historic significance.  Today I decided to make a comparison between the historic photo, and my own photo of the scene as of October 12, 2012. What do you think? Some things have obviously changed, but some have not. This was on the corner of 10th and Main. You can click the pictures for a closer look.

An Evening with Craig Childs

The author Craig Childs has been making the rounds promoting his new book, Apocalyptic Planet, and last evening he was here in Durango talking to a sold out crowd. His talk was fascinating and he was really personable. After his talk, he did a book signing and Yours Truly got to meet my favorite author still living. It was a wonderful night!

It has been getting cold at night. Time to blow out those irrigation lines and clean up the gardens

Enjoy it while it lasts

We have been fortunate that the fall colors have stuck around as long as they have. In another week, I don't expect many leaves will still be clinging to their branches. Get out and enjoy them while you can!

I was up at Purgatory yesterday for work when I snapped this photo. I would say we are past the peak of fall color, but everything still looks exquisite.

Ripple

Colorado has a very storied history. Millions of years ago, there existed a shallow sea which came and went in cycles and left it's mark on the rocks. the slight, rhythmic indentions on this stone are ripples frozen in time.

Theme Day: Silhouette

Horses and their riders hang on the horizon as silhouettes in Blanca, Colorado. I would consider Blanca out of my range for a Durango based photo blog. However, it is within the borders of Dinétah, which is definitely part of my realm.
